Easton, Mass. – (4/28/2013) – Chestnut Hill College's time at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II Championship Tournament came to an end this afternoon, as #5 Griffins lost to #1 New York Institute of Technology (NYIT) 5-0 in the final game of the East Regional. The Griffins nearly muscled a point away from the Bears at number three doubles, where freshmen
Iman Williams-Mulesa (Pickering, Ontario) and
Axe Owens (Trenton, N.J.) forced senior Gabriela Rodriguez (Hermosillo-Sonora, Mexico) and junior Valeria Savina (Vologda, Russia) to a 9-8 final.
Mulesa and Owens hoped to motivate Chestnut Hill College (19-9) with their effort at number three doubles. The Griffins had already dropped number two and number one doubles by 8-5 finals and despite the rookies valiant play, they could not sway NYIT's (23-3) momentum in single play. The top seeded Bears ended the match early with wins at number two singles 6-3, 6-0, and number one singles 6-0, 6-2, the remainder of the individual matches were left unfinished.
The Chestnut Hill College women's tennis team ends the 2012-2013 season with a 19-9 overall record, tying the program record for wins set last year. In the CACC, the Griffins were runner-up at the league championship after earning the #3 seed with a 6-2 league standing. Seniors,
Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia),
Anastasiya Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus), and junior
Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, Ohio) all recorded their 100
th career victory during the course of the season and were recognized with All-CACC selections after the close of the fall schedule.
