Brian Dougherty will add the most prestigious of honors to a long list of career accomplishments with his recent selection to the
National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. Dougherty will be inducted as a truly great player, being a two-time, First Team All-American at the University of Maryland (1993-1996), a two-time Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) Champion (1998 & 2010), a two-time Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award winner (1995 & 1996), and a three-time Major League Lacrosse (MLL) Champion (2003, 2006, & 2007), which previously earned him the title of “Goalie of the Decade” (2001-2010).
Dougherty will be one of eight members in the Class of 2012 which also included; Jen Adams (University of Maryland '01), Roy Colsey (Syracuse University '95), Coach Missy Foote (Middlebury College, 1981-2012), Kelly Amonte Hiller (University of Maryland '96), Jesse Hubbard (Princeton University '98), Tim Nelson (Syracuse University '85), and Coach Cindy Timchal (Northwestern University, University of Maryland, and U.S. Naval Academy, 1982-2012). The Class of 2012 will be officially inducted to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 20, at the Grand Lodge in Hunt Valley, Maryland. The National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, a program of US Lacrosse, was established in 1957 to honor men and women who by their deeds as players, coaches, officials, and/or contributors, and by the example of their lives, personify the great contribution of lacrosse to our way of life. More than 350 lacrosse greats are honored in the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, which is located with the Lacrosse Museum at US Lacrosse Headquarters in Baltimore.
A 1992 product of Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, Dougherty was a high school All-American in 1991 and 1992, while also earning All-State honors from 1990-1992 and winning a state championship in 1991. At the University of Maryland, he was a two-time recipient of the USILA's Ensign C. Markland Kelly Jr. Award as the nation's top goalkeeper (1995, 1996) and was named the Lt. Raymond Enners Award winner as the nation's outstanding player in 1995. In addition, he was the Most Valuable Player of the 1995 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I (DI) Championship after leading the Terrapins to a second place finish. Dougherty played nine professional seasons in Major League Lacrosse (MLL) and was six-time All-Star and a three-time Goalie of the Year three times (2003, 2006, 2007).
He also won two World Championships as a member of the U.S. Men's National Team in 1998 and 2010, before coming to Chestnut Hill College as the head coach for a second-year, NCAA DII Men's Lacrosse team.
Under Dougherty, Chestnut Hill College has shown significant improvement. In 2011, the Griffins finished 7-7 overall and 3-7 in the East Coast Conference (ECC) while earning dramatic victories over #2 Mercyhurst College, 8-7 (OT) on March 13, 2011, and #5 Dowling College, 14-13, on April 23, 2011. In 2012, the Griffins improved to an 8-6 overall record and a 5-5 ECC standing while appearing in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Coaches' Poll for six consecutive weeks (2/27-5/7, 2012). In two seasons he has produced two All-ECC student-athletes, including sophomore attack
Mike Melnychenko (St. Catharines, Ontario) who was named the 2011 ECC Rookie of the Year after leading NCAA DII in goals-per-game (3.57). Dougherty is the third Chestnut Hill College coach to be inducted to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame, joining Betty Shellenberger and Janice Kuklick, who were inducted in 1994 and 2000, respectively.
