Griffin Tennis Tops Broncs

Philadelphia, PA – (10/6/2011) – Chestnut Hill College scored a double victory this afternoon with both the men's and women's tennis teams both scoring wins over, National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I member, Rider University. The Griffin women scored a 9-0 win over the Broncs, while the men won 7-2.
 
Rider University (0-4) scored their only two points of the afternoon at men's number two and number three doubles. Trailing 2-1 heading to singles play, Chestnut Hill College (2-0) rallied with a sweep the individual matches. Freshman Mike Humes (Medford, NJ) started the Griffins off with a 6-0, 6-3 win at number one singles. Sophomore Yoann Pham (Boulogne-Billancourt, France) followed with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at number two singles. Sophomore Manuel Ceniceros (Mexico City, Mexico) and junior Patrick Villafuerte Joson (Old Bridge, NJ) won number three and number four singles, respectively, 6-0, 6-2, and 7-5, 6-3. Senior Julius Twyman (Coatesville, PA) won number five singles 6-4, 6-2, and sophomore Jeramy Solema (Briarwood, NY) was the winner of a battle at number six singles 6-2, 4-6, 10-8.
 
The women's team continues their strong start to the season with the 9-0 sweep. Junior Nastia Shcherbakova (Minsk, Belarus) and sophomore Kelly Dennis (Cincinnati, OH) won the top team flight for Chestnut Hill College (9-1), 8-1. Junior Maria Parapouras (Victoria, Australia) and freshman Morgan Oechsle (Coopersburg, PA) won by the same score at number two doubles. Junior Danielle Knott (Mt. Vernon, NY) and freshman Alexis Puhl (Philadelphia, PA) took number three doubles 8-2. In singles play, the Griffins only challenges arose at number two and number six singles. Fortunately, the Griffins came away victorious in both flights.
 
The women's tennis team returns to Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC) competition tomorrow, Friday, October 7, with a 3:00 p.m. match against the University of the Sciences.
